Santa was walking through his fields in southwest Punjab, looking puzzled as he scraped a layer of thin, crusty white powder off the surface of his soil.
He tasted it and spat it out instantly.
“Oye Banta!”
“Look at this miracle!” Santa yelled, showing his white-crusted hand.
“My land is producing free salt!”
“I thought I was a wheat farmer, but it looks like nature has turned my farm into a coastal salt pan.”
“Maybe I can package this and sell it in the bazaar as ‘Himalayan Organic Salt’!”
Banta walked up, picked up a handful of the crumbly, white-stained earth, and crushed it in his palm.
“Santa-ji, this isn’t a miracle; it’s a terminal medical report for your land.”
“Your soil is suffering from Secondary Salinization due to over-extraction and evaporation enrichment.”
“Salinization?”
“Banta, I use pure groundwater from my deep well!”
“Where is the salt coming from?”
“It’s coming from the bottom of your own tub, Santa,” Banta explained, pointing to a nearby stagnation pool.
“In southwest Punjab and parts of Haryana, when we over-extract groundwater for years, the sweet top-aquifers dry up entirely.”
“We are forced to tap into deeper layers that naturally contain high amounts of dissolved salts, fluorides, and nitrates.”
“When you flood your fields with this heavy water under the blazing hot sun, the pure water evaporates rapidly into the sky, leaving behind all the dissolved salts on the surface.”
“This evaporation enrichment destroys the soil chemistry, reduces your crop yields, and makes the surrounding drinking water toxic for your family!”
“You are slowly turning your fertile asset into a barren desert.”
Santa looked at the white crust on his boots, suddenly feeling a chill.
“Oye… so the water I am pumping to feed my crop is actually poisoning the soil?”
“Exactly,” Banta said.
“Without balanced canal water integration and shifting away from surface flooding, this white powder will ensure nothing grows here for generations.”
