Santa was standing in the cramped, narrow lane of Satya Niketan, right opposite the bustling South Campus of Delhi University.
He was wearing a gold-bordered kurta, holding a brass measuring tape, and pointing proudly toward the sky.
Above him stood an ancient, thirty-year-old two-story brick building that had been magically transformed into a towering, five-and-a-half-story hostel labyrinth.
Fresh wet cement was currently being slapped onto a newly added sixth-floor rooftop tin shed.
Banta walked down the narrow alley, carrying a digital ultrasonic pulse velocity tester, a structural load distribution blueprint, and a copy of the National Building Code (NBC) Guidelines.
He stared up at the warped, bulging brick columns supporting five cantilevered balconies jutting out over the public lane.
“Oye, Santa-ji!”
“Ram Ram!” Banta called out, stepping back to avoid a falling clump of wet plaster.
“Are you auditioning to build the Leaning Tower of Pisa in the middle of a student colony, or are you trying to test how many tons of bricks an unreinforced foundation can bear before it commits hara-kiri?”
Santa laughed heartily, twirling his measuring tape.
“Oye Banta!”
“Expand your commercial vision!”
“You have zero business sense!”
“Millions of students are migrating to Delhi from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and remote mountain towns because local colleges back home have zero placement value!”
“They need cheap rooms right next to the university colleges.”
“My two-story ancestral house was sitting on prime real estate!”
“I simply added four extra floors on top, divided every single bedroom into four tiny plywood cubicles, and rented each matchbox bunk to two students for ten thousand rupees a month!”
“I am serving the nation’s youth and solving the housing shortage!”
“Chalta hai, Banta Bhai!”
Banta tapped the lower ground-floor brick pier with his testing hammer; a dull, hollow groan vibrated through the masonry, and a visible zigzag shear crack opened along the mortar line.
“Santa-ji, your ‘housing service’ is an un-engineered vertical deathtrap!” Banta warned, pulling Santa into the middle of the alley.
“Look at the physics of structural surcharge!”
“This building’s foundation was designed in the 1990s to support two modest residential floors.”
“You have piled four additional concrete slabs, eighty brick partition walls, fifty heavy steel storage beds, and twenty overhead water tanks on top of an unreinforced masonry skeleton!”
“You are playing high-stakes Jenga with young lives!”
Santa scoffed, waving his hand.
“Oye Banta!”
“Concrete is strong!”
“Bricks don’t collapse overnight.”
“Buildings stand for decades in Delhi without any fancy engineering audits.”
“Why bring panic when the rent is flowing?”
“They stand until gravity calls the debt, Santa!” Banta shouted.
“Have we learned absolutely nothing from our own soil?”
“In April 2022, a building collapsed right here in Satya Niketan, burying workers during unscientific alterations!”
“And now, on 6 September 2026, another building collapse in Satya Niketan has shattered our complacency, coming right on the heels of nationwide student protests demanding safe learning infrastructure!”
“Look at the pattern: in Lucknow’s Transport Nagar in September 2024, an un-engineered commercial building collapsed, killing eight people and injuring scores!”
“When you add floors vertically without column jacketing, foundation widening, or structural engineering approval, the lower masonry walls experience catastrophic compression failure.”
“When that bottom brick crushes, the upper five floors pancake down in less than three seconds, crushing sleeping students in their bunks!”
“Exploiting the desperation of students from humble backgrounds by packing them into un-inspected, overloaded matchbox towers isn’t entrepreneurship—it is premeditated structural manslaughter!”
Santa stared at the widening zigzag crack on the ground floor, then looked up at the groaning sixth-floor roof shed where thirty young aspirants were studying for their semester exams.
His rental pride evaporated into cold dread.
He pulled out his phone with trembling fingers.
“Oye… so my extra floors aren’t real estate assets… they are a five-hundred-ton concrete hammer waiting to drop on these children?”
“Precisely, Santa-ji,” Banta said sternly.
“Evacuate the top floors, call a licensed structural engineer, and stop adding bricks before the ground swallows the future of this nation!”

छात्र बहुल इलाकों में इमारतों का स्ट्रक्चरल ऑडिट अनिवार्य होना चाहिये / Adding additional floors onto aged, low-rise residential foundations without structural load recalculation, foundation strengthening, and municipal certification creates severe surcharge stress, leading to progressive pancake collapses. High-density student residential hubs must enforce mandatory structural integrity audits.
- असुरक्षित छात्र आवासों का ध्वस्तीकरण / Dismantling Exploitative Student Housing Sinks:
- विश्वविद्यालयों और कोचिंग हबों में प्रवासी छात्रों की मजबूरी का फायदा उठा कर उन्हें असुरक्षित और संकीर्ण कमरों में ठूंसना बंद होना चाहिये। शैक्षणिक संस्थानों को स्वयं सुरक्षित छात्रावास उपलब्ध कराने चाहिये या निजी लॉज के लिये कड़े सुरक्षा मानक तय किये जाने चाहिये / Educational hubs must integrate safe, standardized on-campus or regulated hostel facilities to prevent informal, predatory housing markets where landlords cram vulnerable migrant students into partitioned, un-ventilated, and structurally compromised quarters.
