Santa was standing in his newly cleared backyard, admiring the towering green slope behind his house.
He was planning to build a large, heavy concrete gazebo right at the base.
“Oye Banta!”
“Look at this hill,” Santa said, patting a large rock.
“My grandfather told me this hill hasn’t moved since the British were here.”
“It’s the most disciplined hill in entire Himachal Pradesh!”
“While the other mountains are sliding around like they’re on ice skates, this one just sits here.”
“It’s perfectly safe!”
Banta walked over, looking at the heavy bags of cement Santa had already piled up.
He noticed a few trees on the slope that were slightly curved at the bottom—the “Drunken Tree” sign.
“Santa-ji,” Banta sighed.
“You are looking at a sleeping giant and calling it ‘disciplined.’”
“In the world of geology, the most dangerous slope isn’t the one that slides every year—people expect that and move out of the way.”
“The real killer is the slope that has been dormant for a long time.”
“Dormant?”
“Banta, it’s a hill, not a volcano!” Santa scoffed.
“It’s the same principle,” Banta replied.
“Instability is ‘infused‘ slowly.”
“Your new road, your heavy gazebo, the way you’ve blocked the natural drainage—you’re basically poking the giant with a stick.”
“Most losses happen when a slope fails for the first time in generations.”
“Because it’s been ‘stable’ for so long, you haven’t taken any precautions.”
“You’re building a gazebo on a trapdoor, and you’ve just started greasing the hinges!”
Santa looked at the cement, then at the “drunken” trees.
“So… the hill isn’t disciplined?”
“It’s just… waiting?”
“Exactly,” Banta said.
“We need to do the fieldwork before the giant wakes up, not while we’re sliding down the valley in a gazebo.”
