Santa was standing at the base of a steep Himalayan slope, staring up with his hands on his hips.
He looked like he was trying to win a staring contest with a mountain.
“Oye, Banta!” Santa yelled.
“I’ve discovered the most disciplined thing in the universe.”
“It’s this mountain.”
“It hasn’t moved an inch since I was a boy.”
“It’s the perfect example of Newton’s First Law of Motion—The Law of Inertia!”
Banta walked up, shaking his head.
“Santa-ji, you’re looking at a sleeping giant and calling it lazy.”
“That mountain isn’t just sitting there; it’s holding its breath.”
“Newton said an object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by an external force.”
“This slope is covered in loose debris that is just itching for an excuse to visit the valley.”
“Excuses?”
“Mountains don’t need excuses, Banta!”
“They are solid rock!” Santa scoffed.
“That’s where you’re wrong,” Banta replied, pointing to a pile of boulders resting precariously on the slope.
“Most landslides aren’t the mountain breaking; they are just the mountain’s ‘leftovers’—loose rock and soil—deciding to stop being lazy.”
“They just need a trigger.”
“A heavy rain acts like a lubricant, reducing the friction, or an earthquake gives it a violent shove.”
“It’s like a person standing on a rug; the person is fine until you pull the rug out from under them!”
Santa looked worried.
“So… if the rain is the rug-puller, and the earthquake is the shover… my house at the bottom is the ‘welcome mat‘?”
“Exactly,” Banta sighed.
“If we don’t map that ‘rug‘ of loose debris, we are just guessing when the giant will stop being lazy and start being a disaster.”

- ज्यादातर स्थितियों में भू-स्खलन ढाल पर पहले से मौजूद मलबे के खिसकने के कारण होता है, न कि ठोस चट्टानो के नये सिरे से टूटने के कारण। अपने घर के पास की ढलानों पर ‘मलबे के ठहराव के कोण‘ (Angle of Repose) को पहचानें / Landslides are often the mobilization of pre-existing loose debris, not the breaking of solid rock. Identify “Angle of Repose” on slopes near your home.
- बारिश या भूकम्प जैसे ट्रिगर स्थिर मलबे की जड़ता (inertia) को तोड़ते हैं। अतः भारी बारिश के दौरान, ढीले मलबे से ढकी ढलानों के नीचे के क्षेत्रों को सावधानीवश खाली कर दें / Triggers like rain or earthquakes overcome the inertia of resting debris. During heavy rains, evacuate areas below slopes covered in loose material.
