Santa was standing at the entrance of a narrow, three-meter-wide lane in a dense student coaching colony, waving his arms dramatically.
A three-story illegal extension had just sheared off a hostel building further down the alley, burying several rooms under debris.
Two heavy fire tenders and an NDRF advanced rescue vehicle were stuck completely motionless at the mouth of the lane, unable to enter because Santa’s commercial tenants had encroached onto the road with extended concrete ramps, stationary generator sets, and parked motorbikes.
Suddenly, a loud, piercing police siren blared, and a convoy of ten black luxury SUVs with flashing red-and-blue lights pulled up directly behind the stuck rescue trucks.
Santa turned around, combed his hair, and rushed toward the SUVs with folded hands and a giant floral garland.
“Welcome, Netaji!”
“Welcome to the disaster site!” Santa cheered, preparing to garland a prominent local VIP who stepped out of the SUV surrounded by fifty private security guards, news cameras, and cheering party workers.
Banta, wearing a dust-covered helmet and carrying a hydraulic spreader-cutter tool on his shoulder, pushed his way past the VIP’s private security barrier and grabbed Santa’s arm.
“Santa-ji, throw that garland into the trash and tell this VIP convoy to reverse two kilometers down the main road immediately!” Banta yelled over the noise of camera flashes and screaming sirens.
“We have people trapped beneath five tons of concrete rubble down this alley, and your VIP tamasha has completely blocked the only remaining foot-path for the rescue teams!”
The VIP’s security guards stepped forward, but Santa puffed out his chest.
“Oye Banta!”
“Show some respect!”
“Netaji has taken out valuable time from his busy schedule to inspect the disaster site, express heartfelt condolences, and announce fifty thousand rupees compensation for the victims!”
“His presence boosts the morale of the rescue workers!”
“The cameras are broadcasting live!”
“His presence is choking the golden hour of survival, you blind sycophant!” Banta roared.
“Look at this catastrophic operational failure: first, our brave fire and rescue agencies were delayed by forty minutes because your illegal commercial encroachments, generator sheds, and un-regulated parked bikes turned a public street into an impassable obstacle course!”
“The firefighters have to carry heavy hydraulic jacks, thermal imaging cameras, and acoustic life-detectors by hand on foot for half a kilometer because the truck cannot enter!”
“And now, just as the search-and-rescue dogs are trying to catch the faint scent of breathing survivors beneath the debris, this ten-car VIP cavalcade arrives with blaring sirens, blinding floodlights, and a mob of two hundred political workers!”
“The loud sirens drown out the acoustic listening devices, the heavy crowds step on delicate rubble voids, and the entire rescue operation has to be halted for thirty minutes just to provide security protocols for a photo opportunity!”
“A disaster site is an emergency intensive care unit, not a political rally ground!”
“True disaster management means enforcing strict, non-negotiable traffic and right-of-way clearance protocols, keeping politicians away from active rescue zones during the first twenty-four hours, and equipping our first responders with micro-rescue vehicles suited for narrow Indian lanes!”
“Back up the cars, clear the lane, and let the professionals save lives!”
The VIP, noticing the angry murmurs of the surrounding student crowd and Banta’s stern confrontation, quietly stepped back into his SUV and ordered his convoy to retreat to the district headquarters.
Santa, his floral garland dangling awkwardly in his hand, looked down the narrow, choked alley where firefighters were sweating profusely as they ran on foot with heavy rescue gear.
Santa dropped his garland into the mud and immediately began pushing parked scooters out of the way.
“Oye Banta… so a VIP siren doesn’t rescue anyone… it just steals the last breath of air from someone trapped under the stone?”
“Precisely, Santa-ji,” Banta said, hoisting his hydraulic cutter.
“Clear the road, enforce the building setbacks, and let the rescue teams work.”
“In a collapse, minutes mean heartbeats!”
