Santa stands up in the Panchayat meeting, full of zeal.
“Brothers and sisters! I have the perfect modern solution for that useless Daldali Jameen!””
“Let’s demand a government project to fill it up with debris and cover it with a big, strong concrete slab!”
“And then we can build a community hall on the top.”
“We solve the mosquito problem and get a new building!”
“Two birds with one stone! Isn’t it Banta?”
The villagers nod, impressed by Santa’s practical idea.
Banta, however, shakes his head gently.
“My friend Santa’s idea is born from a desire for cleanliness and progress,” Banta begins.
“But sometimes, what we see as a useless Daldali Jameen or wetland is actually one of the mountain‘s most hard-working and selfless servants.”
“It is our natural Suraksha Kavach.”
The villagers look confused. “A Suraksha Kavach?”
“That muddy patch?” someone asks.
“Yes,” Banta explains. “That Daldali Jameen is nature’s own Sponge City.”
“When heavy rains come, or when the river swells, that Daldali Jameen or wetland acts like a giant sponge.”
“It soaks up thousands of litres of excess floodwater, holding it, and releasing it slowly and gently after the danger has passed.”
“It dramatically reduces the fury of the flood for the fields and homes downstream.”
“It is our free, living flood barrier.”
He continues, “If we kill that sponge by filling it with concrete, where will all that floodwater go?”
“It will rush straight into our fields and homes with much greater force.”
“By trying to solve a small mosquito problem, we will be inviting a very big flood problem.”
“This is a classic example of Eco-DRR or a Nature-Based Solution.”
“We must work with nature‘s systems, not against them.”
“So what do we do?” Santa asks, his “concrete fever” subsiding.
“Instead of destroying it,” Banta proposes, “let’s restore it.”
“Let’s work with experts to plant the right kind of water-loving grasses and trees around it.”
“Let’s clean it out, so its sponging capacity increases.”
“We can make it a beautiful natural park, a home for birds, and a powerful protector for our village.”
“We can build our community hall on the safer, higher ground nearby, with a beautiful view of our living wetland.”
The villagers start murmuring excitedly, imagining a beautiful park instead of a concrete slab.
“A living flood barrier that is also a park for our children…” Santa says, a look of wonder on his face.
“Banta, you’ve made me realize that sometimes the wisest solution is not to build something new, but to heal something old and powerful that nature has already given us.”
