The River That Held Its Breath

Narration of the terrifying silence that comes before the storm, and the moment a simple journey turns into a high-stakes waiting game.

Santa and Banta were on their long awaited  journey to Yamunotri, a pilgrimage that took them along the winding, precipitous roads carved into the valley walls.

The monsoon of 2025 had been relentless, and the Yamuna river below was a powerful, muddy torrent. Santa, ever the optimist, was marvelling at the signs of progress.

“Banta, look!” he exclaimed, pointing to a brand-new, gleaming concrete bridge they had just crossed near Syana Chatti.

“What brilliant engineering!”

“So strong and modern.”

“Our government is truly making the Yatra safe for everyone.”

“We have nothing to fear!”

Banta, however, was looking not at the bridge, but up at the freshly cut hillside above the road.

The slope was a raw, bleeding scar of mud and loose rock, with a pile of excavated debris pushed precariously close to the edge.

“I hope you are right, Santa,” he said, his voice low and worried.

“But I fear our engineering is creating new problems faster than it is solving old ones.”

“A bridge is only as strong as the mountain it stands on.”

They had stopped for tea a little further up the road when a deep, gut-wrenching rumble echoed through the valley.

It was not thunder.

The ground shuddered.

Across the valley, on a steep, barren slope fed by a rivulet, a massive section of the mountain seemed to simply dissolve.

A colossal landslide, a river of rock and mud, crashed down into the main river channel below.

The sight was both terrifying and spectacular.

But after the initial roar, a strange, unnatural silence descended.

And then they noticed it. The mighty Yamuna river, which had been a raging torrent just moments before, was beginning to slow down.

Its roar faded to a murmur, then to a gurgle, and then, to a mere trickle.

Santa, in his profound innocence, felt a wave of relief.

“Phew! That was a close one, Banta!”

“But look, the scary river is gone!”

“Now the path is truly safe!”

Banta’s face was pale. He grabbed Santa’s arm, his grip like iron.

“Santa, you fool,” he whispered, his voice filled with a dread Santa had never heard before.

 “The river is not gone.”

“It has held its breath.”

“And the most dangerous moment is not when a river roars, but when it goes silent.”

“That landslide did not just fall; it has built a dam.”

“We are now standing on the edge of a ticking geomorphic time bomb.”

• नदी को बहने की जगह चाहिये: हिमालयी नदियों के जल प्रवाह व प्रवाह की दिशा में नाटकीय परिवर्तन हो सकते है। अतः नदी किनारे बसने या अन्य गतिविधि में लिप्त होने में जोखिम हो सकता है। अतः बसावत के लिये नदी से सुरक्षित दूरी पर ऊंचा स्थान चुने – आखिर हमारे पूर्वज सुरक्षा के लिये यही तो करते थे।               
• नदी का अचानक शान्त होना, खतरे की निशानी: नदी घाटी में, विशेष रूप से तेज वर्षा के बाद उफान में शोर मचा कर बह रही नदी के पानी में अचानक व अकारण कमी के साथ उसका शान्त हो जाना बड़े खतरे की निशानी है। नदी के ऊपरी  जलागम क्षेत्र में भू-स्खलन के कारण नदी के पानी का रुकना व अस्थाई झील का बनना इसका कारण हो सकता है। झील का जल स्तर बढ़ने के साथ भू-स्खलन के कारण बने इस बांध के ढहने की सम्भावना बढ़ती चली जाती है और इस स्थिति में निचले क्षेत्र भारी बाढ़ की चपेट में आ सकते है। अतः नदी  के पानी में अचानक कमी का अंदेशा होते ही तत्काल ऊपरी स्थानों की ओर पलायन करें।              
• विकास जनित जोखिम: हिमालय में सड़क निर्माण व चौड़ीकरण पहाड़ी ढाल को अस्थिर और क्षेत्र को भू-स्खलन व त्वरित बाढ़ के प्रति संवेदनशील बना सकता है। अतः अत्यधिक व सक्रिय निर्माण कार्य वाले क्षेत्र में अतिरिक्त सावधानी बरते और बेवजह रुकने या जोखिम उठाने से बचें
• स्थानीय परम्पराओं व परम्परागत ज्ञान का सम्मान: क्षेत्र में पीढ़ियों से रह रहे लोग अपने अनुभव व अर्जित ज्ञान के आधार पर असुरक्षा के लक्षणों को सहज ही भाँप लेते है। अतः स्थानीय व्यक्तियों के द्वारा, विशेष रूप से सुरक्षा के सम्बन्ध में दिये गये सुझावों को गम्भीरता से लें और उन पर अमल करें।                
• आपकी सुरक्षा आप का उत्तरदायित्व: सम्बन्धित प्राधिकारी निश्चित ही आपकी सुविधा व सुरक्षा का ख़याल रखते है। परन्तु हिमालयी क्षेत्र में स्थितियाँ अचानक नाटकीय व अप्रत्याशित रूप से बदल सकती है – विशेष रूप से यहाँ का मौसम। अतः हिमालयी क्षेत्र में हमेशा सावधान व सतर्क रहें, अपने चारो तरफ की स्थितियों के प्रति सचेत रहें और हाँ, सुरक्षित निकासी की एक सरल व प्रभावी योजना या रणनीति हमेशा आपके दिमाग में होनी चाहिये।
