Santa was visiting his ancestral mountain village in Uttarakhand, holding a small brass urn.
He walked up to an ancient, beautifully carved stone spring site—a traditional Naula—only to find it completely dry, filled with dead leaves and covered in a layer of dark, powdery soot.
“Banta, look at the loss of my heritage!” Santa lamented, tapping the dry stone basin.
“My grandfather told me this sacred Naula never dried up, even in the hottest summers.”
“We used to perform all our family religio-magical rites here.”
“Now, it’s just a dry monument.”
“The gods must be angry with our village!”
Banta reached out, scraped a layer of the dark, greasy black soot off the stones, and held it up to the light.
“The gods aren’t angry, Santa-ji; our transport and industrial emissions are choking the sky.”
“This is Black Carbon, and it is killing the glaciers of our Third Pole.”
“Black carbon?”
“Banta, this is just road dust!”
“How can smoke down here dry up a Naula way up here?” Santa asked, cleaning his hands.
“It alters the entire thermal physics of the mountains, Santa!” Banta explained, pointing toward the receding glacial peaks above the ridge.
“The heavy influx of tourists, un-checked vehicular pollution, and agricultural burning release massive plumes of black carbon.”
“This soot travels up the atmosphere and deposits directly onto our pristine Himalayan ice sheets.”
“Because black carbon is dark, it absorbs solar radiation instead of reflecting it, accelerating glacial recession at dangerously high rates!”
“As our freshwater reserves at the Third Pole deplete, the internal aquifers that feed these traditional mountain Dharas and Naulas dry up forever.”
“We have reduced our ancient water harvesting practices to symbolic rituals, while replacing them entirely with dependent tap systems.”
“We must aggressively check vehicular pollution, restrict black carbon emissions, and actively revive traditional water management systems before our mountain valleys turn into uninhabitable stone fields!”

- केंद्रीकृत नल प्रणालियों पर अत्यधिक निर्भरता के कारण पारंपरिक जल संचयन संरचनाएं (नौले और धारे) विलुप्त हो रही हैं। जलवायु अनुकूलन के लिए इन स्थानीय और पारंपरिक जल भंडारों का पुनरुद्धार करना अत्यंत आवश्यक है / Over-reliance on centralized tap infrastructure causes the extinction of traditional water harvesting structures (Naulas and Dharas). Sustainable climate adaptation requires the physical restoration of these indigenous water reserves.
