Santa was standing at the edge of his newly paved transport depot in a lower Himalayan river valley, admiring a clean, flat gravel bank by the river channel.
He had set up a small table with a large, fresh sweet dough ball of laddu mixture and was rolling a small piece in his palms.
Banta walked into the depot, carrying a high-precision slurry viscosity sensor, a sediment yield chart, and a core sample of riverbed colluvium.
He looked at Santa’s dough bowl, then out at the wide, boulder-choked riverbed stretching upstream toward the gorge.
“Oye, Santa-ji!”
“Ram Ram!” Banta hailed him.
“Rolling sweets by the riverbank?”
“Tell me, do you understand what happens to a mountain avalanche when it enters the neck of this narrow valley?”
Santa chuckled, tossing a sweet round dough ball into the air and catching it.
“Oye Banta!”
“What is there to understand?”
“If a landslide or ice fall drops ten thousand tons of rock into the river five leagues upstream, then exactly ten thousand tons of rock will pass by my depot!”
“A stone is a stone, and a kilo is a kilo.”
“It doesn’t magically reproduce in the river!”
“Matter cannot be created out of nothing; I passed my eighth-grade science exam!”
“Chalta hai!”
Banta picked up Santa’s small dough ball, walked over to a pile of dry, loose sand and sharp gravel on the ground, and rolled the sticky ball forcefully across the dirt.
In a split second, the small dough ball picked up pebbles, sand and gravel, expanding into a massive, heavy, jagged clumpfive times its original size.
“Santa-ji, look at your sweet dough ball now!” Banta said, holding up the swollen, pebble–crusted lump.
“Your eighth-grade science forgot about the hungriest monster in the Himalayas: the deadly process of Valley Entrainment!“
Santa blinked, pointing at the bloated ball.
“Oye Banta!”
“It got bigger because it’s sticky!”
“But a mountain avalanche isn’t a sweet dough ball made of sugar!”
“It is infinitely more aggressive and far more sticky, Santa!” Banta shouted.
“When that mammoth mass of rock and melted ice plummeted in Tibet and entered the Trishuli and Lhende Khola river gorges on 26 August 2026, it didn’t stay at its original volume!”
“As a high-velocity avalanche roars down a steep, narrow mountain canyon, its basal shear stress is so immense that it acts like a giant vacuum cleaner and a bulldozer combined!”
“It scours the valley floor, ripping up unconsolidated riverbed alluvium, tearing out ancient glacial moraines, pulling in river water, uprooting entire forests, and plucking house-sized boulders from the canyon walls!”
“This process is called Entrainment!”
Santa scratched his beard, looking uncomfortable.
“So… it picks up hitchhikers along the way?”
“It doesn’t just pick up hitchhikers, Santa; it consumes the entire valley!” Banta roared.
“Look at the scientific post-mortems of the 2021 Chamoli disaster in Uttarakhand or the 2017 Piz Cengalo-Bondo disaster in the Swiss Alps!”
“In Chamoli, the initial rock-ice mass was estimated at around 25 to 27 million cubic meters, but through entrainment of riverbed sediment, water, and loose debris along the Rishiganga and Dhauliganga valleys, the total mobilized volume swelled to over forty to fifty million cubic meters!”
“That is nearly double or triple its starting bulk!”
“The water mobilizes loose muck, elevating the fluid density to over 2.0 g/cu cm, turning an ordinary river into a roaring, high-density, concrete-like battering ram that carries enough buoyant kinetic force to toss five-hundred-ton boulders and wipe out concrete dams like matchsticks!”
“If you design your downstream flood defence based only on the initial mass at the top of the peak, this entrained monsterwill devour your embankments and your depot before your workers can even put their boots on!”
Santa stared at the swollen, rock–crusted dough ball in Banta’s hand, then looked up the narrow, boulder–strewn canyonwhere millions of tons of loose sediment sat waiting for the next surge.
He quickly pulled his sweet trays off the table.
“Oye Banta… so the falling mountain is just the spark… but the valley floor is the giant gunpowder barrel it consumes as it runs?”
“Precisely, Santa-ji,” Banta smiled.
“The mountain provides the speed, but the unmanaged valley riverbed provides the bulk.”
“If we don’t clear and govern our valley sediment, the river will use our own riverbeds to bury us!”
