Santa was standing inside the third-floor corridor of a bustling commercial coaching complex in a dense student hub.
He was holding a large padlock and a metal chain, securing the secondary emergency fire exit door that opened onto a narrow iron ladder behind the building.
Banta walked up the cramped, dimly lit staircase, struggling past dozens of exposed electrical panels, bundles of tangled high-voltage wires, and stacked wooden chairs that reduced the three-foot staircase width to barely eighteen inches.
He stopped and stared at Santa locking the exit.
“Oye, Santa-ji!”
“Ram Ram!” Banta called out, out of breath.
“Are you locking an emergency fire exit in a building where three hundred students are currently sitting inside soundproofclassrooms?”
“Have you lost your mind?”
Santa smiled, pocketing the key with a satisfied nod.
“Oye Banta!”
“You don’t understand coaching center management!”
“If I leave this back door open, students sneak out without paying their quarterly fees, or outsiders enter to steal study materials!”
“Security comes first!”
“Besides, we have the main front staircase.”
“Why waste space on two exits?”
“I have also installed heavy decorative iron grilles on every window facing the street so the facade looks neat and thieves can’t enter.”
“Chalta hai!”
Banta reached over, pointed his laser temperature sensor at the main electrical distribution board humming loudly on the ground-floor landing directly beneath the solitary staircase, where blue sparks were intermittently jumping between loose, overheated terminals.
“Santa-ji, you haven’t built a security system; you have engineered a subterranean crematorium with an iron lid!” Banta shouted.
“Do you realize what happens when that overloaded electrical panel catches fire?”
Santa frowned, crossing his arms.
“Oye Banta!”
“It’s a modern coaching institute!”
“We have air conditioners, biometric attendance machines, and top-rank faculty!”
“If a small spark happens, students will simply walk down the stairs!”
“They will be incinerated or suffocated by toxic smoke before they take five steps, Santa!” Banta roared.
“Have we completely erased the nightmares of our recent past?”
“Look at the May 2019 Takshashila Arcade fire in Surat, where twenty-two young students lost their lives because the solitary wooden staircase caught fire, forcing desperate teenagers to jump from the third floor!”
“Look at June 2023 in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, where hundreds of civil service aspirants had to smash windowpanes and rappel down high-voltage television cables because the primary staircase was completely engulfed in thick, toxic plastic smoke from a meter board fire!”
“When an electrical fire ignites at the ground level, the narrow, unventilated staircase acts as a high-speed chimney,funneling blinding carbon monoxide straight up to the upper floors!”
“If you padlock the back exit and bolt decorative iron grilles across all the windows, you eliminate every single escape vector!”
The students cannot run down, they cannot climb out the back, and they cannot jump to safety!”
“You have trapped three hundred brilliant young minds inside a concrete smoke chamber!”
Santa looked at his heavy iron padlock, then down the narrow, three-foot stairwell choked with wires, imagining hundreds of terrified teenagers screaming in blinding smoke.
The memory of the Surat and Mukherjee Nagar visuals flashed through his mind.
His hands trembled as he hastily unlocked the chain and threw the fire exit wide open.
“Oye Banta… so my decorative window grilles and locked doors weren’t stopping thieves… they were locking the children inside a furnace?”
“Precisely, Santa-ji,” Banta said seriously.
“Clear the staircase, remove the grilles, and install external fire-escape balconies today.”
“A business profit is worthless if it costs a child’s heartbeat!”
