Santa was standing in his kitchen, casually frying a fresh batch of bread pakoras on a raging open-flame burner.
Directly beneath the stove, tucked inside a dark, unventilated wooden cabinet, sat two massive commercial LPG cylinders.
To make matters worse, Santa had a habit of leaving the main gas regulator turned permanently to the “ON” position.
Banta walked into the kitchen, sniffed the air suspiciously, and immediately opened the back window.
“Oye, Santa-ji!”
“Are you cooking breakfast, or are you trying to turn your kitchen into a launching pad for the Indian Space Research Organisation?”
Santa flipped a pakora, laughing heartily.
“Banta, you are always worrying like an old auntie!”
“It’s just a minor whiff of gas.”
“It happens every morning.”
“Chalta hai!”
Banta knelt down, reached into the cabinet, and forcefully snapped the main LPG regulator to “OFF.”
“Santa-ji, this Chalta hai attitude is a bigger hazard to India than any climate extreme.”
“You are an educated man.”
“You’ve watched television advertisements warning you about gas safety.”
“You know that an unventilated leak can ignite instantly.”
“Yet, you leave the regulator open and store a spare explosive under your stove like it’s a sack of potatoes!”
“Oye Banta!”
“Everyone in the neighbourhood does it!” Santa argued, waving his spatula.
“Who has the time to turn the regulator off every single night?”
“It’s too much pain to bend down!”
“Exactly!” Banta countered, standing up.
“That is the core of the problem.”
“It is not a lack of awareness; it is our casual, socio-psychological conditioning toward daily safety.”
“We know seatbelts save lives, but we only pull them across our chests when we spot a traffic policeman up ahead.”
“We know medicines require a doctor‘s prescription, but we grab strong antibiotics off the chemist‘s shelf based on a shopkeeper‘s advice, taking two pills until we feel better, and saving the expired remnants for next year!”
“When our entire lifestyle is wrapped in this casual disregard for basic hygiene and health risks, it is a foolish illusion to expect our citizens to proactively maintain an emergency go-bag, install a fire extinguisher, or hire a structural engineer to retrofit their homes.”
“Safety isn’t a checklist you fill out after a disaster warning, Santa—it’s a behavioural habit that must be beaten into our daily routine from childhood!”
Santa looked at the turned-off regulator, then at his plate of pakoras.
“So… saving two seconds of bending down at night is actually a gamble on my family’s life?”
“Yes, Santa-ji,” Banta said quietly.
“If we don’t kill the Chalta hai mindset in our own kitchens today, our disaster resilience plans are just beautiful words written on empty paper.”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- आत्मसंतुष्टि और लापरवाही का विरोधाभास / The Paradox of Complacency:
- केवल जागरूकता सुरक्षा की गारंटी नहीं देती। वास्तविक आपदा रोकथाम या न्यूनीकरण प्रायः इसलिए विफल होता है क्योंकि हमारे समाज में ‘चलता है‘ वाली एक गहरी लापरवाह मानसिकता है, जो सुरक्षा नियमों के ऊपर तात्कालिक सुविधा को प्राथमिकता देती है / Awareness alone does not guarantee safety. True disaster resilience fails because of a deeply ingrained cultural attitude of casual complacency (“Chalta Hai“) that prioritizes convenience over life-saving risk protocols.
- व्यावहारिक कारणों का शमन / Behavioural Root-Cause Mitigation:
- जोखिम कम करने के तरीकों (जैसे इमरजेंसी गो-बैग रखना या रेगुलेटर बंद करना) को तब तक लागू नहीं किया जा सकता, जब तक सुरक्षा को एक कानूनी मजबूरी के बजाय बचपन से सिखाई गई दैनिक आदत में न बदल दिया जाए / Risk reduction protocols (like maintaining emergency go-bags or gas regulations) cannot be institutionalized until safety compliance is transformed from a forced legal penalty into an internalized, daily habit practiced from early childhood.
