The Shaking Jelly and the Sleeping Giant

Santa and Banta were visiting their cousin in a fancy, high-rise apartment in Gurgaon.

Santa was mesmerised by the view, looking out at the glittering skyline.

“Ah, Banta!” he sighed, sipping his tea.

“This is the life.”

“So strong, so modern.”

“Not like our shaky, crumbling old mountains.”

“Down here on the plains, the ground is flat and solid as a rock.”

“We are finally safe!”

Banta, however, was not looking at the view.

He was staring at his tablet, his face pale with a familiar, scholarly anxiety.

“Santa,” he said, his voice grim.

“Did you read the news?”

“A 6.3 quake just hit Afghanistan.”

“Over 20 people dead.”

“The Blue Mosque is damaged.”

Santa shook his head sadly.

“Itch, itch; very sad.”

“These things are always happening in those mountain places.”

“Afghanistan, Nepal and our Uttarakhand ……. it’s a dangerous neighbourhood.”

“Good thing we are here in safe, solid Delhi.”

Banta slowly put down his tablet.

“Santa, you magnificent fool,” he said, his voice trembling with the weight of his knowledge.

“That quake was not a warning for the mountains.”

“It was a warning from the mountains, sent directly to us.”

“We are in more danger right here, on this sofa, than we ever were in our village.”

“What are you talking about?” Santa scoffed.

“The ground here doesn’t move.”

“I’ve felt the tremors.”

“The fan sways a little, my tea ripples, it’s a two-minute thrill, and then it’s over.”

“Because those were 4.0 tremors, you simpleton!” Banta retorted, standing up.

“Do you know what we are sitting on?”

“We are not on solid rock.”

“This entire Delhi NCR, this vast Indo-Gangetic plain, is built on a massive bowl of alluvial soil.”

“It’s not a rock, Santa.”

“It’s a bowl of jelly!”

To demonstrate, Banta grabbed a plate and a bowl of kheer from the fridge.

He placed a small sugar cube on the plate.

“This is our village in the Himalayas.”

“On solid rock.” He tapped the plate.

The sugar cube shimmied a bit.

“Now, this,” he said, placing another sugar cube on top of the wobbly kheer, “is your fancy 20-story building in Delhi.”

He tapped the side of the bowl.

The kheer began to wobble violently, and the sugar cube was instantly swallowed by the sweet, milky mass.

Santa stared, his love for kheer suddenly gone.

“Banta… what did you do?”

“That, my friend, is soil amplification.”

“A small shake on the rock becomes a catastrophic wave in the jelly.”

“When the real quake hits, this entire city will shake just like that kheer.”

“And if that’s not bad enough, there is a giant sleeping right under our feet.”

“They call it the Central Seismic Gap.”

“A sleeping giant?” Santa whispered, now genuinely scared.

“Worse.”

“A giant that hasn’t stretched in over 600 years,” Banta said, his eyes wide.

“An 800-kilometer unruptured fault line.”

“It is not sleeping, Santa.”

“It is building up strain“.

“It is a geological time bomb.”

“The Afghanistan quake was a small firecracker.”

“This will be the atom bomb.”

“And we are sitting right on top of it, in a house built on jelly.”

The single most important lesson for Delhi NCR is that the soft alluvial soil of the plains is not a safety feature. It is a dangerous amplifier that will make the shaking from a distant Himalayan earthquake far more severe and destructive.

लम्बे समय से भूकम्प नहीं आया, इसका तात्पर्य भाग्यशाली होने से कहीं ज्यादा निरन्तर बढ़ रहा जोखिम हैं /A “Gap” Means Danger, Not Safety

लम्बे समय से क्षेत्र में भूकम्प न आने का यह तात्पर्य कतई नहीं हैं कि क्षेत्र सुरक्षित हैं या फिर यह कि हम पर राम जी की कुछ ज्यादा ही कृपा का नतीजा हैं। भूकम्प का न आना यही बताता हैं कि इस क्षेत्र में ऊर्जा, बस लगातार जमा हो रही हैं और वो अभी तक अवमुक्त नहीं हुयी  हैं। सो हर बीतते दिन के साथ यह खतरा बढ़ रहा हैं.

A long period without an earthquake (a “seismic gap“) does not mean the area is safe. It means an immense amount of strain is building up, making the next, inevitable earthquake far more powerful.

छोटे और प्रायः आने वाले भूकम्प और कुछ नहीं बस चेतावनी हैं / Small Quakes are Warnings, Not the Main Event

प्रायः महसूस किये जाने वाले छोटे भूकम्पों से आपको इस मुगालते में कतई नहीं रहना चाहिये कि आने वाले बहुप्रतीक्षित भूकम्प की तीव्रता भी ऐसी ही होगी। यह छोटे भूकम्प, बस ट्रेलर हैं, जो लगातार बता रहा हैं कि पिक्चर अभी बांकी हैं! वह भूकम्प इन छोटे झटको से कहीं ज्यादा शक्तिशाली और सच में विनाशकारी होगा। सो सुरक्षा के प्रति आश्वस्त या लापरवाह होने की जगह आपको आने वाले बड़े भूकम्प  का सामना करने की गम्भीरता से तैयारी करनी चाहिये.

Do not be fooled by the minor tremors that are often felt in Delhi. These are not the “big one.” These are just small reminders that the tectonic plates are active and a major rupture is a high-probability event.

दिल्ली में भूकम्प का जोखिम किसी भी तरह देहरादून से कम नहीं हैं – दोनों ही देश के भूकम्प मानचित्र के जोन – IV में अवस्थित हैं। यह क्षेत्र कभी भी हिमालय में सम्भावित बड़े भूकम्प से प्रभावित हो सकता हैं – अतः तैयार रहें, सुरक्षित रहें.

Delhi NCR is in Seismic Zone IV and is dangerously close to the Central Seismic Gap, a high-risk zone capable of producing an 8.0+ magnitude “Great Earthquake.”
