Santa was driving his tractor along a narrow valley road, singing a cheerful Punjabi song.
He pointed to a massive landslide that had come down a steep slope upstream, completely choking off the river channel with a huge wall of mud and boulders.
“Banta, look at nature’s engineering!” Santa laughed, stopping the tractor.
“The landslide has built a beautiful, free swimming pool for our village!”
“The river has stopped flowing down to the commercial project below, so we have all the water to ourselves.”
“It’s a windfall!”
Banta grabbed Santa’s arm and yanked him up onto the tractor seat to look over the crest of the mud wall.
Behind the landslide debris, the river water was rapidly rising, turning into a massive, un-engineered, unstable lake pressing against a barrier of loose mud.
“Santa-ji, that isn’t a swimming pool; it’s a Landslide Lake Outburst Flood (LLOF) waiting to explode!” Banta shouted.
“The mountain has choked the throat of the river, and the water is building up immense hydrostatic pressure.”
“When that loose mud and boulder wall breaches—or if the hydropower dam upstream suddenly releases its reservoir water without warning—this entire valley will be wiped out in minutes!”
Santa’s jaw dropped.
“Oye… so the water is backing up like an angry giant?”
“Yes, Santa!” Banta said.
“To contain this disaster, we need an absolute three-pronged strategy.”
“First, we must have cross-boundary data sharing—if an artificial or natural blockade happens upstream, or if a dam reservoir is being opened, the down-valley communities must know before the water is released.”
“Second, we need continuous scientific monitoring of river blockades to assess the breach threat and generate rapid warnings.”
“And third, the community must be trained to read the signs—traditional knowledge tells our elders that when a flowing river suddenly goes completely dry or turns deep grey, it means a blockage has occurred upstream and it’s time to run for the ridges!”
“We can’t stop the mountain from sliding, Santa, but we can stop being caught asleep at the bottom of the tub!”
