Santa was standing on the riverside terrace of a teahouse along the Bhotekoshi highway corridor near the Nepal border, balancing a piping hot cup of masala chai.
His seismograph smartphone app suddenly began buzzing with an intense alert, and the earth beneath his boots rattledwith a low-frequency rumble.
Minutes later, the radio announced that raging waters were roaring down the Trishuli, Lhende Khola, and Bhotekoshirivers, crossing into the northern plains.
“Oye Banta!”
“Run for the open fields!” Santa shouted, dropping his teacup onto the wooden table.
“Did you feel that violent tremor under our boots?”
“A massive earthquake has struck the high peaks of Tibet!”
“The shockwave must have cracked open some giant glacial lake up in the clouds!”
“We are facing a textbook Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) caused by a tectonic fault line!”
“Pack your bags, the fault has ruptured!”
Banta calmly walked out of the teahouse porch, wearing a yellow field helmet and holding a portable broadband seismogram recorder alongside a live satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) thermal displacement terminal.
He tapped Santa’s vibrating phone with his pen.
“Santa-ji, pick up your teacup and look at the frequency spectrum on this screen!” Banta said sternly.
“You are screaming ‘earthquake‘ and ‘GLOF‘ because your eyes saw water and your feet felt a rumble.”
“But you have completely misdiagnosed the crime scene of the Himalayas!”
Santa pouted, holding his suitcase.
“Oye Banta!”
“If it wasn’t an earthquake, why did my seismograph ring?”
“And if there wasn’t a glacial lake burst, where did this roaring black ocean of water coming down the Trishuli originate?”
“Water doesn’t fall out of a dry blue sky!”
“The sky was dry, Santa, but a mountain wall just fell out of the clouds!” Banta shouted.
“Look at the seismogram signal!”
“A genuine earthquake begins with a sharp, lightning-fast P-wave spike followed by an S-wave snap.”
“But look at this trace: it has an emergent, low-frequency, cigar-shaped waveform that builds up gradually and rumbles for minutes!”
“This is not the signature of a tectonic fault slipping; this is the seismic footprint of a mammoth, multi-million-ton hanging wedge of rock and glacier ice detaching and plunging vertically over a full vertical kilometer down a precipice!“
Santa’s jaw dropped.
“A whole kilometer?”
“Falling straight down?”
“Yes, Santa!”
“Exactly like the 7 February 2021 Chamoli disaster in Uttarakhand, where a massive wedge of rock and hanging glacier broke off the steep face of Ronti peak, plunging nearly two kilometers into the valley below!”
“On the morning of 26 August 2026, across the border in Tibet, an identical mega-avalanche struck!”
“Billions of metric tons of permafrost-degraded rock and ice collapsed vertically.”
“When that unimaginable mass slammed into the bedrock valley floor, the physical kinetic impact struck the Earth with the explosive energy of a small nuclear blast, sending shockwaves through the crust that people across Nepal and India mistook for a tectonic earthquake!”
“There was no giant pre-existing glacial lake that broke; the falling mountain itself generated the seismic roar and created its own instant river!”
“If you blame a phantom GLOF and an earthquake, you will build concrete dams against lakes that don’t exist, while leaving our mountain workers completely defenceless against the hanging cliffs ready to drop on their heads!”
Santa looked from his phone’s cigar-shaped wave to the dark, churning river below, his tectonic panic replaced by awe and geotechnical reality.
“Oye Banta… so the mountain didn’t shake from below… it shook because a giant hammer fell from above?”
“Precisely, Santa-ji,” Banta smiled.
“The Earth wasn’t breaking from underneath; it was catching a falling titan.”
“Learn to read the wave, or the falling cliff will catch you off guard!”
संता – बंता की इस जुगलबन्दी से आज हमने क्या सीखा:-
- भू-स्खलन–हिमस्खलन जनित कंपन और टेक्टोनिक भूकंप में अंतर / Differentiating Mass-Movement Seismicity from Tectonic Earthquakes:
- अत्यधिक भारी चट्टान और बर्फ के विशाल मलबे के ऊंचे पहाड़ों से गिरने पर जो भूकंपीय कंपन (seismic signals) उत्पन्न होते हैं, वे सामान्य टेक्टोनिक भूकंप से भिन्न होते हैं। इनका वेवफॉर्म अचानक झटके (P-wave) के बजाय धीरे-धीरे तेज होने वाली गड़गड़ाहट जैसा होता है। आपदा प्रबंधन टीमों को इस अंतर को पहचानना चाहिये ताकि हिमनद झील टूटने (GLOF) का भ्रम पाले बिना तुरंत निचले इलाकों में त्वरित बाढ़ की चेतावनी भेजी जा सके / Mammoth rock-ice avalanches generate distinct, emergent, long-duration seismic waveforms characterised by high-amplitude surface waves rather than the sharp, impulsive P-wave arrivals of tectonic ruptures. Disaster management authorities must train seismic analysts to rapidly identify these mass-wasting seismic signatures to issue downstream flash-flood alerts before water reaches vulnerable settlements.
- हिमनद झीलों के बिना भी विनाशकारी सैलाब का खतरा / De-coupling Outburst Floods from Lake Basins:
Cryospheric degradation and thawing permafrost at extreme altitudes destabilize hanging glaciers and steep rock faces, precipitating catastrophic ice-rock avalanches that generate instantaneous, highly destructive flood waves.

Thank you for the detailed information. I hope, we, humans start taking these things seriously and stop doing things we did in past with the mountains. Riverside establishments should be erected after thorough due diligence done by the certified experts.
