Santa almost dances into the village square, his eyes shining.
“Banta! I am back from my trip to the city!”
“And I have returned from the future!”
“The journey that used to be a full day’s ordeal, a test of one’s backbone, is now just a four-hour breeze!”
“The new wide road is like a Makkhan ki Sarak!”
“Finally, our mountains are becoming like the plains – distances measured in kilometers, not in how many prayers you have to say before you reach!”
Banta, who is observing a line of ants patiently navigating around a large stone, smiles at Santa’s enthusiasm.
“It’s good that your journey was swift and your backbone is intact, Santa.”
“Speed can be a great comfort.”
“But tell me, did you notice the mountainsides along this new Makkhan ki Sarak?”
“The mountainsides?” Santa thinks for a moment.
“Well, they looked a bit… raw.”
“Like a barber had given the mountain a very close and rather angry shave.”
“Lots of JCBs, lots of cutting.”
“Exactly,” Banta says, his tone gentle but serious.
“Our ancestors also knew how to cut mountains.”
“But they chose not to, unless absolutely necessary.”
“Their paths, the ones we still walk on, were like gentle conversations with the mountain.”
“The path would bend when the mountain asked it to, it would climb slowly, respecting the slope.”
“That’s why they measured journeys in time – Do Prahar ka Raasta – because they knew the journey was dictated by the mountain‘s terrain and mood, not by a man-made number on a milestone.”
He continues, “This new kilometer craze, this desire to make everything straight and wide and fast, often turns that conversation into a loud, angry argument.”
“We shout at the mountain with our giant machines, we cut deep into its chest, destabilizing slopes that have been resting peacefully for centuries, all to save a couple of hours.”
Santa’s excitement deflates slightly.
“But… isn’t a faster road Vikas, Banta!”
“Is it Vikas, Santa,” Banta poses quietly, “if we save three hours on a sunny day, only to be stuck for three days during the monsoon because our angry shave has triggered a massive landslide that has blocked the very road we were so proud of?”
“Our ancestors’ paths were slower, yes, but they were often more reliable because they didn’t provoke the mountain‘s anger.”
“They understood that in the Himalayas, the most patient path is often the most enduring one.”
“Sometimes, by trying to conquer time, we end up losing a lot more of it, waiting for the bulldozers to clear our own mess.”
Santa looks thoughtful.
“So, a four-hour journey that could become a four-day blockade…”
“That doesn’t sound like a very good bargain.”
“It’s like winning a sprint race only to find you’ve broken your leg at the finish line.”
“Perhaps the old journey of patience had its own wisdom.”
Banta nods.
“It was the wisdom of knowing that in these mountains, we are guests, and it’s always polite to walk gently in your host’s home.”
