As the extreme cold of early January 2026 begins to fluctuate, our community faces a hidden geological phenomenon: Pore-Pressure Lag.
During the freeze, water inside the soil turns to ice, acting as a temporary “glue.”
However, as the ground thaws, this ice melts into liquid water faster than it can drain away. This trapped water creates internal pressure that pushes soil particles apart, drastically reducing the slope’s “shear strength.”
The danger is that landslides often occur days or weeks after the weather has warmed up. This guide helps you identify these invisible shifts.
1. The “Hydraulic Warning” (Water Behavior)
Water is the primary architect of slope failure. Watch how it exits the earth.
-
Sudden “Springs”: рдврд╛рд▓ рдореЗрдВ рдЕрдЪрд╛рдирдХ рдкрд╛рдиреА рдХрд╛ рдлреВрдЯрдирд╛ рд╢реБрдн рд╕рдВрдХреЗрдд рдирд╣реАрдВ рд╣реИрдВ / Look for new water seeping out of the slope where it was dry yesterday. If the water is muddy or tea-coloured, it means it is carrying internal soil (fines) with itтАФa process called “piping” that hollows out the hill from within.
-
The “Dry Pipe” Mystery: рдврд╛рд▓ рд╕реЗ рд░рд┐рд╕рдиреЗ рд╡рд╛рд▓реЗ рдкрд╛рдиреА рдХрд╛ рдЕрдЪрд╛рдирдХ рд╕реВрдЦ рдЬрд╛рдирд╛ рдЦрддрд░реЗ рдХрд╛ рд╕рдВрдХреЗрдд рд╣реИрдВ / If your drainage pipes or “weep holes” in retaining walls are suddenly dry despite the thaw, the water has found a new, internal path. This is a high-risk signal of internal saturation.
-
Ponding: рдзреНрдпрд╛рди рджреЗ, рдКрдкрд░реА рдврд╛рд▓ рдореЗрдВ рдХрд┐рд╕реА рд╕рдорддрд▓ рд╕реНрдерд╛рди рдкрд░ рдкрд╛рдиреА рддреЛ рдЬрдорд╛ рдирд╣реАрдВ рд╣реЛ рд░рд╣рд╛ / Check for sudden pools of standing water on flat “benches” of the slope. This water is “loading” the weight of the hill while simultaneously softening the base.
2. The “Physical Shift” (Structural Geometry)
Geometry doesn’t lie. If the angles of your surroundings change, the earth is moving.
-
If they are leaning downhill, the shallow soil is sliding. If they are leaning uphill, it often indicates a deeper, rotational “slump” is beginning.

These often run parallel to the edge of the hill. If you can drop a pebble and don’t hear it hit the bottom quickly, the crack is deep.
-
If the ground looks like it is “swelling” or “bulging” out toward the road or your house, the weight of the hill above is pushing the base forward.
3. The “Retaining Wall” Audit
Retaining walls are the “front lines” of our community’s defense.
-
The “Back-Fill” Gap: Look behind the wall. Is there a new gap between the soil and the wall? This means the soil is pulling away or the wall is tilting forward.
-
Horizontal Shifting: Check the vertical joints between wall segments. If they are no longer aligned (one panel is further forward than the other), the “Pore-Pressure” is exerting uneven force.
-
Rust and Efflorescence: New white powdery deposits (efflorescence) on the wall mean massive amounts of water are pushing through the concrete, carrying minerals with them.
