Santa was reading a tourist brochure about high-altitude alpine lakes in the upper reaches of the Himalayas.
“Banta, look at the beauty of climate change!”
“The glaciers are melting, and the size of these gorgeous glacial lakes is increasing every year.”
“More water means more scenic boating resorts for tourists!”
“It’s a golden commercial opportunity!”
Banta took out a technical satellite imagery sheet, showing a massive body of water held back by a fragile wall of loose ice and uncompacted glacial moraine high above the clouds.
“Santa-ji, you are looking at an expanding bathtub on the roof of the world and planning a boat cruise.”
“That lake is a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood or GLOF engine fuelled by rising global temperatures!”
“An engine?”
“Banta, it’s just a peaceful lake sitting quietly near the snow!” Santa argued.
“It is peaceful until the volume exceeds the strength of that loose moraine wall,” Banta said, pointing at the diagram.
“As global temperatures rise, these lakes grow in both size and volume at an alarming rate.”
“Our three-pronged strategy must begin with rigorous scientific assessment of lake volume expansion using satellite telemetry.”
“Second, we must establish cross-boundary data sharing—because these glaciers cross borders, a melt in one country can drown a valley in another.”
“And third, warning generation must move at the speed of a text message, paired with community preparedness.”
“Traditional knowledge tells our high-altitude herders how to read changes in glacial cracks and moraine seepage.”
“If we don’t combine modern satellite tracking with grass-roots evacuation drills, that beautiful alpine resort you want to build will become a high-velocity wall of water that wipes out everything for a hundred kilometers downstream!”
Santa rolled up his tourist brochure, looking up at the snow-capped peaks with a newfound sense of respect.
“Oye Banta… let’s forget the boating resort.”
“Let’s make sure our village evacuation path to the high ridge is completely clear before the bathtub overflows!”
